OBJECTIVES:

  • Through discussion and worksheets, students will explore their own personal family heritage and stories of immigration and will be able to express these stories through the use of color and symbols

  • Through viewing other modern artists, Students will formulate their ideas about the relationships between color and symbol and their personal stories.

  • After ideation, students will be able to create a silhouette mosaic piece that reflects their personal story and were able to choose a color that represents their personal feelings

  • After learning how to use the laser cutter and lab to create vector-based images, students will learn to cut out their symbols in mirrored acrylic medium to make their own personal “reflections”

  • After writing ideation, students will be able to use the chalkboard wall in the outdoor classroom and write about these experiences to assess the hardships, challenges as the “wall” or barriers that they experience.

  • During reflection and discussion, students will be able to discuss and communicate their personal ideas on the positive aspects, pride, and humanization of these shared experiences.

  • During reflection and discussion, students will be able to communicate their process and their ideas about both their symbols and colors and the meanings behind them in a class discussion period reflecting on the completed mural/mosaic wall.

  • After constructing their group mosaic project, students will reflect and  consider related issues to the topic of immigration after reflecting and discussing the experiences of their peers and self inquiry.  (ie. Why do people immigrate? What reasons? What are the concerns of immigrants? (ie. Racism, sexism, climate change, resources)
