Experience Narrative: Friday was our third day of Service Learning teaching at Johnson Elementary. I taught our 4th grade class which has about 28 students in total. They were very excited to see me and work more on perspective. In this class I introduced the third lesson which was combining One Point Perspective words and Illusion. There were a couple of small issues that arose for me to keep in mind during our future lessons. One point was just some more grounded instruction for the students on what shapes to cut out of the paper, Ms. England suggested that I could do this on the back of the I am worksheet, just so the students had clearer visuals as we walked through it together. Another was helping students get their ideas down to a one word adjective versus several words. The insight I gained was while I do have a strong foundation of a lesson and the kids are very excited to do it, transitions from section to section in the activity could be smoother and would help the students understand their objectives even more.

What Worked Well / Interpretation/Content Meaning: My classroom management was much smoother this time, and I feel as though by utilizing things like having students hold up their paper when they were done folding it, they were all able to follow along to the lesson and instruction. They were very excited about choosing their adjectives and were able to connect one point perspective and illusion by means of the vanishing point and where the words should be on the paper. I think having those small tools to further their instruction in other ways like I had with the I am worksheet, where it was individual or class wide was very helpful for the students to bridge their learning and incorporating that more throughout the lesson would help all the students connect and learn in their different ways and would be more effective.

What Did Not Work / Personal Significance: As was discussed there were some transitional issues, I used my classroom management techniques to bring the students back, but I think by employing other techniques it would be easier for the students to follow along to the steps in the lesson. Maybe having clearer whiteboard instructions, or table instructions for the students in the back to follow along with so that the students could work more at their own pace and I wasn't interrupting them as much with next steps. I think by doing these small things it will allow the class to run at a much smoother pace and will allow students to bridge their own lesson, it will also take care of me explaining the next steps to those who are ready over and over again as students finish and are ready for the next section and weren't paying attention to my talking because it didn't apply to them yet. Moral of the story is by creating those small connections and steps for the students it will save me time and be even better for their learning.

Future Actions: In the future, I will take into consideration the ways I can instruct each part of a lesson more in depth, meaning addressing things like, will I be speaking? Will they be speaking? Will I be using my voice, written instruction, worksheets, a powerpoint? And how utilizing each of these things will work for the students, by addressing how this is going to help or change my teaching strategies more directly instead of just using them as another way for me to talk. I feel as though the I am worksheet was a great student centered activity and I really want more of that, and ways for me to have a smoother flow in the classroom. I feel by recognizing these tools and using them more intentionally I will be able to instruct them even better. My goal for them is that they continue to be engaged in the lessons and for them to guide their own learning even more.
