What Worked Well / Interpretation/Content Meaning: This was our third meeting with our Artistic Abilities students, and we had a few students missing meaning that we only had 6 individuals present for this lesson. This lesson was a lot of fun for our students and we had to balance finishing up our second lesson and doing our third lesson. I think overall this combination of lessons really allowed for focus in several areas of the studio habits of mind and general Artistic Practices. First several students had to express themselves in both their tradition and their representation piece. They learned and developed craft with their paper masks and building those paper building techniques, they had to envision and plan colors, themes, and meanings and discuss those choices. And they had to persist and remain on task for both separate activities. This being said I think this lesson being so rooted in almost all areas of the studio habits allowed for students to really focus on their tasks, creativity, and make thoughtful decisions. Each student was able to grasp and finish representing their traditions, while also focusing on the big idea of self expression and how each of us work differently with the same materials, and how this can also represent us . I also prepared a chart of sorts of different paper techniques which the students and other teachers found helpful because it helped them think of the different shapes of paper. I think this really demonstrated how including tools in your teaching can greatly benefit your students. I think by continuing to build upon these theories were learning in class and connect them to our lessons the students will be able to express themselves in new and unique ways.

What Did Not Work / Personal Significance:

This lesson continued to build on our previous teaching and so it was more confident and stronger than it previously was. That being said we did run into a couple of small issues during this lesson. The first being that because of our previous lesson changes we had to begin class by finishing up our previous lesson. Students then had to refocus to another activity which proved to be a challenge. We worked individually with students to get them engaged in the activity and used probing and came up with even more motivational questions to help refocus them to our second activity. This was a small issue but was reoccurring and so it made us come up with some unique questions to help the students ideate and think about the new activity we were working on and not the previous activity. Also while we planned on using glue sticks, some of the students were having difficulty gluing and holding it down to stick it, so we shifted those students to glue guns which worked much better for them, again illustrating how important differentiation is when it comes to both materials and instruction. Moral of the story is there are many things that can distract a student, and taking a few moments to get them back on track allows them to continue to learn and transition properly often without needing it again.

Future Actions: In the future, I will continue to build assisting tools to help my students visualize tools and techniques they can utilize. This proved to be a great tool during this lesson and it really allowed students to think about new ways to build their masks and technique, as well as allowed them to understand effective and new ways to use a material they have all previously encountered. I will also continue to think about other effective ways to differentiate my instruction for students so that they call all continue top build that knowledge and skill in a way that works for them. I will continue to test out these different methods of teaching and tools to help me become a better educator for my students and I hope by doing this my students continue to engage and develop their skills.

Documentation:

This student really wanted to use shades of red and pink on her tradition pieces since those are her favorite color. She made several tradition objects to represent traditions in her life, and was able to discuss and communicate the importance of each one, and wanted to know if we had any shared traditions.

This student wanted to use many different techniques to represent his face. He payed close attention to following the examples on the board that I showed and then used each of those to build a representative image of himself.

This student was able to choose aspects of himself that he believed to be important characteristics and then use those to represent himself, such as his hair, a nose, mouth, and his ears.

This student chose colors that she believed best represented her rather than constructing a straight forward face. She played around with how she believed those colors represented her feelings at that moment and the textures that they created using only one or two paper building techniques taught.

Here is the poster I made for reference of what techniques were taught to the students
