What Worked Well / Interpretation/Content Meaning: This was our second meeting with our Artistic Abilities students, and we had a few students missing meaning that we only had 6 individuals present for this lesson. This lesson definitely went more Smoothly than the first one, the students seemed very engaged and it was much easier to relate and instruct them based on the skills we learned last class. Several of the students chose a direct approach to the traditions they represented for example halloween or thanksgiving while others chose more simple traditions, for example fall by sculpting fall leaves. Each student was able to grasp and represent a tradition that they personally connected to and understand that traditions are individual and personal. Students were able to verbalize everyday traditions that they have and why they matter to us. I think by continuing to relate the lessons to them as individuals and build stronger relationships they will explore their identities even further in their art making.

What Did Not Work / Personal Significance:

While this lesson was a much stronger one than our previous in terms of connections to the materials and ourselves, there were still a few small issues. The first being that we had to rearrange our schedule as we ended up using air dry clay which cannot be painted until 24 hours after it has been made. This means we had to swap some lessons around to give students time to paint, however it gave the students needed time to really focus on building and representing what they intended. Also, some students were unsure how to make certain features or where to start with their objects. Simply asking is it a circle or a square like Alison suggested worked for a few of them but not all, some of them needed to see the shapes in order to visualize what an object looked like. Walking them through the process after showing them the shape was much easier. Moral of the story is that differentiation is vital in not just the process of making art but also the instruction of art.

Future Actions: In the future, I will demonstrate my teaching is different ways, stating what I am doing and showing what I am doing, and allowing students to touch the materials before they begin working with them. This will allow students to build stronger connections based on the way that they learn, keeping in mind that not all students learn and process information in the same ways. I will continue to try and meet my students at their level and hope that by delving further into them and their interests they can continue to express themselves in their artwork.
