What Worked Well / Interpretation/Content Meaning: This was our first meeting with our Artistic abilities students and so I focused quite a bit on getting to know them as individuals. We have some individuals who are very talkative, and some who are non-verbal but still listen and did a wonderful job of following directions. During our reflection we went around and asked each student what their favorite letter was and why, they were able to think about it, and many liked things that had a unique texture such as the sand. I think what this lesson really allowed us to do was see how each individual works, and what pace they work at so we can better develop our lessons and differentiation for students who work either faster or slower through the activity. I think walking them through the steps in greater detail will benefit some of the students immensely.
What Did Not Work / Personal Significance:
There were a couple of small issues that arose during the lesson but Alison was able to help us resolve them easily. Some students were very focused on the social aspect rather than the lesson and they required more hands on attention to have them go through the activity. Guiding questions were very crucial to refocus the students back to the task on hand, and Alison gave us some great tips on what worked for certain students individually when it came to refocusing them. Moral of the story is, I learned that several of our students need help staying on task, but asking them questions or ideating individually works really well. Also, like Alison said giving them individual choices helps them narrow down on what they want to do.
Future Actions: In the future, I will take more into consideration how to better guide and show the process to these students. And I will focus on differentiation, coming up with a related back up task for those who finish early so they are able to delve deeper into the lesson and have a similar idea. This lesson was great because it allowed me to learn what to expect from individual students and how to help them learn. I think now that we know names, personalities, and interests it will be easier to relate, connect, and help students individually express themselves. Now that I have met them I have a better understanding of their capabilities and where they need more assistance in the lessons we plan on teaching. My goal is for them to continue expressing themselves in more unique and complex ways.
