Big Idea: Expressive Space

Project Description:

For our fifth class, students will create a 3D Paper sculpture relief of an imagined alien creature attached to an illusion or perspective background. Teachers will show an example of completed work alongside instruction to show a step by step process.

Essential Understanding

The essential understanding for this project is for students to explore expressive features of art (line, space, and color) to create engaging perspectives and how the perception of space and real space are interpreted and shown in different ways.

Intended Outcomes

  • Students will be able to observe the differences between visual illusions of space and physical space

  • Students will be able to plan what perspective technique they will use and describe how they want their Alien to look before moving on to their final work.

  • Students will be able to draw a background using either a one point perspective or illusion

  • Students will be able to utalize paper building techniques (roll, cones, layering etc.) to create a relief sculpture of an alien creature

  • Students will be able to compare and contrast the techniques (one point versus relief) they used to create their final piece.

  • Students will be able to combine their knowledge of one point perspective techniques (such as one point perspective or illusion) and relief sculptures to create their final piece.

Skills

The skills the students are working towards are:

  • Critical thinking during ideation and creation processes

  • Interpreting and discussion decisions in Art making

  • comparing and contrasting

  • making connections

Documentation

Day 1 Nov 19th 2021:

This student finished her ideation sheet and was going to move onto her final sheet of paper to create the background. We had a talk about connecting her creature to a place and she chose the moon because it is a wolf like alien, and in getting her to describe the reasoning behind her decisions she was able to describe to me the most important ares to build off of the page to create her final relief.

This student really wanted the focus to be on the cuteness of her alien, we had a discussion about how the connects to protection or strength and she explained that there is power in being nice and sweet to other people, even if its not how you normally think about strength.

This student finished his sketch before moving onto his final sheet of paper, he decided to create his illusion background he was going to collage it like we taught in class. He explained that he really wanted their to be importance in the color since his creature was a lion and you can express you emotions from color he was going to use color to show strength. We had a talk about what a strong color would be and he suggested warmer colors like red or yellow.

This student was beginning to work on their illusion background and used their sheets from the class to refresh their memory of how to create their illusions. This student explained to me they also wanted to use color and shading like in my example to create and express their feelings in their final, or rather the feelings of their alien creature to tell us more about them. They talked about using colors to talking about what kind of person they are or where they are from, which is a cold planet so they might use different shades of blue to convey that.
